Fungal Meningitis From Contaminated Steroids

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with fungal meningitis after receiving steroid shots, you may be eligible for compensation. Our attorneys can review the details of your case to see if you have a valid product liability claim. If your doctor gave you these drugs after they had been recalled, you may have a case for medical malpractice.

The fungal meningitis outbreak caused by contaminated steroid shots hit Florida particularly hard. In Florida, there have been 23 cases of the illness, and three of those people died. As of today, 32 people have died nationwide because of fungal meningitis caused by the tainted medications, and more than 400 people have become ill with fungal meningitis.

The dangerous drugs were manufactured by the New England Compounding Center in Framingham, Massachusetts. The steroids are used for a variety of purposes, including relieving back pain.

When investigators inspected the NECC facility, they found disturbing signs of carelessness, including bacteria and mold in the clean rooms where the drugs were made. NECC has since been closed down and all of its products have been recalled. Officials believe as many as 14,000 people may have been exposed to the contaminated steroids.

Today, the owner of NECC Barry Cadden invoked his Fifth Amendment right to remain silent before a congressional comittee investigating the contaminated drugs.
