What is a traumatic brain injury (TBI)?

A traumatic brain injury, also referred to an acquired brain injury, occurs when someone suffers a sudden trauma that causes damage to the brain. When the head suddenly and violently hits an object, a traumatic brain injury may occur. If an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue, a TBI may occur.

Are there degrees of severity with traumatic brain injuries?

Traumatic brain injuries are classified based on the degree of severity: mild, moderate, or severe, depending on the extent of damage to the brain. A mild TBI may allow the victim to remain conscious or he may lose consciousness for only a short period of time. A more severe TBI will result in lengthier loss of consciousness and much more serious symptoms.

What are some common symptoms of brain injury?

With mild traumatic brain injuries, victims may experience headache, confusion, dizziness, blurry vision, ringing in the ears, and fatigue. A person with moderate to severe brain injury may experience any or all of the following symptoms:

• Mood changes
• Changes in sleep pattern
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Convulsions
• Behavioral changes
• Agitation
• Confusion
• Inability to awake from sleep

What are the treatments for traumatic brain injury, and why is damage to the brain difficult to detect?

While brain injury is difficult to diagnose and treat, there are some treatments available. Often, the symptoms of a brain injury mimic other types of injuries. It is imperative to receive medical attention immediately following a brain injury, and you should know that brain injuries are often considered not as serious as they may be. Damage is not always immediately apparent. Because little can be done to reverse the initial damage done to the brain, medical personnel must focus on preventing further damage. Some treatment modalities for traumatic brain injury are physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, psychological treatment and social support.
