Teens and Automobile Accidents
Statistics reveal that teen drivers are more likely to be involved in a car accident than any other age group due to their lack of experience and maturity, their “need for speed,” their propensity for cell phone use and the influence of alcohol, drugs and their peers.
Teen drivers are four times more likely to be killed in an automobile accident and more likely to ignore basic safety precautions like wearing seat belts and observing posted speed limits than all other drivers. The six months after obtaining a drivers’ license are the deadliest six months in a teen drivers’ life.
The five fatal behaviors that contribute to so many teen car accidents are speeding, failing to yield, tailgating, ignoring weather conditions, and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
A teen driver is also more likely to be involved in an automobile accident when other teens are in the automobile chatting, laughing, texting and being generally distracting and exuberant as teens can often be.
